A School in the City

Our proposal for a School in the City considers how the character of spaces for learning and play could support the requirements of the programme and use while informing the school’s relationship to the city, the arrangement of spaces and ultimately the choice of structure and materials.
In the dense neighbourhood around Bervens Løkke in Oslo these requirements pose a challenging situation. A school must accommodate spaces for a wide range of activities, both planned and unpredicted, each with their own requirements and thresholds.
The project explores the relationship between the exposed and the protected, open and focused, the classroom and the playground, in order to make the most of the carefully arranged spaces within a modest architectural background for the life of the school.
